FRENCH ART NOUVEAU FIX GOLD 3 PART BEVELED PICTURE LOCKET BY EMILE DROPSY. FRENCH ART NOUVEAU LOCKET BY EMILE DROPSY.

Jean Baptiste Jean Dropsy was one of the most famous French medal lists around the turn of the last century. He was born in 1843 and died in 1923. Most of the work he produced, depicted idealized maidens surrounded by flowers and vegetal forms of great subtlety.

This beautiful locket was made circa 1905 and portrays a maiden amongst irises. It is are in three parts, containing a bevelled glass partition inside to hold a photo of a loved one.. Measuring 1" across and 3/16" thick.

It is clearly signed E. Dropsy on the front to the left edge. There is a facsimile signature for E. Dropsy, with French assay marks. It is also marked with a makers mark on the adjoined loop and "FIX" on the bale which was the name given to a special 14 K heavy covering process invented in France.

This process is so thick that good pieces such as this will often test as solid 14 carat gold. The FIX process of high quality hot gold foil laminating onto brass was first created in France in the early 19th century by a young Paris jeweller called Francois Savard who worked in the Marais district. His process used an unusually thick layer of 18 ct or 14 ct rose gold foil over brass which was then gilded in 18k yellow gold to form jewellery which would withstand long term wear and be easily mistaken for real gold. It opens and closes perfectly and the internal bevelled glass is as new. There is one tiny scratch on the edge ny the hinge where someone tested the gold. WEAR TO SIDE EDGE AS PICTURED WHERE IT OPENS.
